Red Ribbon Week

Dear Parents,The observance of Red Ribbon Week started in 1985 after Special DEA AgentEnrique “Kiki” Camarena was kidnapped and murdered by drug traffickers inMexico. This tragic event produced an immediate outpouring of grief, but overtime has generated a sense of hope across America through the observance ofRed Ribbon Week at the end of October in all schools, during which childrenare educated about the life-threatening effects of drug abuse and commerce, with thehope that they will reject these pitfalls. At Neuse Charter School, students will active learn through lectures, discussions and games about drug abuse the week of October 19 to October 22. On October 22, students are encourage to wear red (shirt, jacket) to express they support to a drug free life/school.

Jump Rope For Heart is for children in Kindergarten through 6th grade.

Jump Rope For Heart promotes the value of physical activity to elementary and middle school children while showing them they can contribute to their community's welfare. This is a time when children can establish the foundation for movement skills. these are also the years when positive learning experiences can help establish a positive attitude and appreciation for participating in regular, daily physical activity for life.

Why JUMP is so Important!

Heart disease ranks as this nation's N0. 1 killer; stroke is No. 3 and leading cause of serious disability. Every year, 1 million people die from cardiovascular disease and stroke. That`s 1 of every 2,5 deaths in the United States.
These diseases may remain critical problems in the future because of poor lifestyle habits among adults and children. For example, only one of 10 American participates in 30 minutes or more vigorous activity every day. In addition...
* Over 15% of children and adolescents are now overweight;
* 4 million children have above-normal blood pressure;
* 27 million children have high cholesterol
Healthy lifestyle can help prevent heart disease and stroke. Good nutrition, physical activity, staying tobacco free, and maintaining a healthy blood pressure and weight are all part of a healthy lifestyle. Jump Rope for Heart helps get this message across to students.
American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) and American Heart Association (AHA).
